Refugees: MPs offer refugees work placements

1 min read

The idea follows a research report released by the youth homelessness charity last week, highlighting the barriers faced by young refugees seeking employment.

Lisa Nandy, policy officer at Centrepoint, said: "We plan to run work experience pilots to place young refugees with MPs to raise issues such as the lack of references and the need for placements for young people."

The report, Waiting in Line, said the employment barriers faced by young refugees costs the economy about 22m a year in benefits.

Centrepoint reports that the number of young refugees it sees has quadrupled in the past five years.

An inflexible benefits and English for speakers of other languages system, a lack of recognition of overseas qualifications, dispersal to high unemployment areas and lack of references are all blamed for the exclusion of young refugees from the labour market.
