Reforms of youth court gather momentum

There seems a growing appetite for changing the way young offenders are dealt with by the courts. But how radical change will be is yet to be decided.

The departing chair of the Youth Justice Board Frances Done last month called for a "radical cross-departmental review" to explore alternative ways of addressing offending behaviour and welfare needs of young people without criminalising them.

The YJB's views will feed into an ongoing inquiry into the effectiveness of youth courts being chaired by Lord Carlile and administered by the National Children's Bureau (NCB) and the Michael Sieff Foundation. It is understood that the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) is receptive to proposals on the issue. So what alternatives are there?

Chris Stanley, former head of policy and research at crime reduction charity Nacro, has been working on the issue with the Michael Sieff Foundation.
