Rapid assessment for family carers

Social Care
East Sussex County Council is creating a rapid response team to assess whether extended family members can look after children on the verge of being taken into care.

The council's Family Plus Service is being set up in response to the Public Law Outline to work alongside its family group conferencing service.

Helen Davies, deputy director for children and families in East Sussex, said the council identified the need for a quick assessment of extended family members who may come forward as potential carers.

"It's about doing this assessment of a family member or friend and then providing ongoing support," she said. "They are taking on children who sometimes have complex emotional needs and we want to make sure they get proper support."

It has allocated £150,000 to the service for the first year.
