The college will be an independent organisation led and run by social workers. Social workers, managers and those who use social work services are encouraged to respond, so the college's role and purpose is shaped accordingly.
The consultation's main aims are to establish the purpose of the college, who should be able to join it, how it should be managed and how it should work with people involved with social work services. It will also look at the ways in which the college should work with unions and regulators such as the General Social Care Council.
The proposed function of the college will be to improve and support social work by providing leadership by those in the profession. It will lead the development of the vocation and will build relationships with various bodies that hold statutory responsibility for social work. Significantly, the college aims to bring pride to the profession by building on existing good practice in the UK, and hopes to generate cultural change by raising the status and standard of social work.
