Public opposes private firms

Education
Most members of the public are opposed to private companies running state schools, a major survey has revealed.

Despite the government's commitment to the academies programme, 55 per cent of those interviewed said they were not in favour of the involvement of private companies, with only 19 per cent expressing support. And 36 per cent would support charities running state schools.

The British Social Attitudes survey also examined views on parenting. Among older age groups, parents have a more "modern" outlook on parenting than non-parents of the same age. Among 18- to 34-year-olds, however, parents tended to have more "traditional" ideas on parenting than non-parents.

The research was carried out by the National Centre for Social Research, which conducted 4,000 interviews for the survey.
