Prison: Styal mother and baby unit criticised

The Chief Inspector of Prisons has criticised the mother and baby unit at Styal prison.

In an inspection report published this week, Anne Owers said the unitfailed to meet national guidelines and child protection requirements. She said procedures were unsafe and that the unit has "drifted away frombest practice".

The report adds: "There were problems with the management of the motherand baby unit, and some nursery nurses had left because of a perceivedlack of support. As well as a reduced creche provision - which meantmothers had less opportunity to attend work, education or programmes -there was insufficient provision for babies' development and support formothers."

Phil Wheatley, director general of the Prison Service, said that sincethe inspection the mother and baby unit had improved. Styal is a prisonfor women in North West England and North Wales, and 60 per cent ofinmates are mothers.
