Pre-case work pays dividends

Early intervention with troubled families has helped many authorities reduce the number of care proceedings.

Latest annual care application figures for English local authorities present a mixed picture.

The statistics, published by the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (Cafcass), show that the majority of councils have recorded an annual drop, with 59 per cent (90 out of 152) of local authorities reporting a decline in the number of care applications per 10,000 children in 2013/14 compared to the previous year.

The decline has been widely welcomed after five years of year-on-year growth.

However, the latest figures also show that 38 per cent (58 out of 152) councils reported an increase in care applications during the same timeframe, while three per cent (four councils) had no change.
