Poor-performing schools must improve their performance or face closure, the government said last week. The warning came as ministers announced further funding for the National Challenge programme. The programme seeks to boost GCSE results in England's 638 worst-performing schools. But the Local Government Association said the government's "one size fits all" approach ignored good work done by local authorities on problem schools. See Vox Pop, p16.
