The raft of causes and contributing factors to poverty all need to be tackled if progress is to be continued, with many needing a special focus - for instance the issue of debt. Debt can have a crippling effect on families and the principal victims are all too often children, with a lack of income each week often meaning sacrifices are made on children's diets, clothing and housing.
Research also shows that single parents and low income families are more vulnerable to getting into debt and are more likely to fall behind with bills, meaning cyclical issues of deprivation, debt and family pressure are often hard to break.
