A skilled workforce is an essential ingredient of a thriving economy.
When it comes to achieving this, those who have a role in advising young people about their careers should encourage them to consider the wealth of vocational career opportunities available.
Having worked for City & Guilds and the British Chambers of Commerce, it is clear to me there is still a completely unjustified stigma attached to skills-based careers. For example, research by The Prince's Trust in 2002 found that, despite the UK's skills shortage, young people still struggled to find vocational skills opportunities and were held back by negative attitudes towards skills-based careers.
