The answer? Take a group of troubled teenage girls, send them to an American camp for several months, subject them to strict discipline, isolation and hardship and they will be transformed into model citizens.

This is the hope of the seven families who - worn down by their daughters' seemingly inexplicable anger, alcohol and drug misuse and disrespect - have signed them up to take part in the series Brat Camp, currently showing on Channel 4. If only it were that simple.

The seemingly spoilt, loud and rude behaviour - as acted out in Brat Camp - was presented as something the girls could control and change if they wanted. While this may be true to some extent, this could be an indication of much more serious problems in their lives. We believe that the "tough love" approach of brat camp is unlikely to bring any lasting change.
