The Government has a continual programme of initiatives to try and bridge this gap, yet we are at risk of getting further and further away from what actually makes young people tick, and from the root causes of disengagement from education and lack of motivation.
The same way that parents have for decades offered money and treats as "bribes" for good schoolwork, the Government is enticing young people to stay on longer at school with financial help through the Education Maintenance Allowance, plus new higher education grants planned for next year. But remembering how being out with friends can still be far more appealing to a teenager than being inside with school books, more is needed to boost aspiration and empower young people to take their futures seriously.
