The challenges facing children trying to live healthy lifestyles have been well-documented in recent years, with much public debate on the most effective ways of overcoming obesity and promoting fitness.

The idea that we need to promote fitness early to reduce the number ofunfit adults has not risen without provocation. In 1980, just 10 percent of British adults were classed as obese, now the figure is almostone in four. Despite attempts to promote exercise in schools, figuresreleased by the Department for Transport suggest that children areincreasingly likely to take a bus or car to school rather than walk. In1992 some 61 per cent of 10- to 12-year-olds walked to school, but thisfell to just 50 per cent by 2005.

A report released in 2006 by England's chief medical officer underlinedthe daily exercise requirements for adults and young people. It wassuggested that adults should undertake 30 minutes of moderate exercisefive times a week; this was doubled to a full hour for children andyoung people.
