Policy & Practice: Policy into practice - The role of informationin enhancing services

1 min read
The Childcare Bill is about to pass through the House of Lords, and it contains important proposals on getting information to parents. Specifically, information about the different types of childcare support that's available to them. Key to the proposals is a new duty on local authorities to provide a brokerage service on different care options and information for children and young people up to the age of 20.

The vision is of an integrated service at a national level thatdisseminates information through a helpline and the internet, which issupported by comprehensive local information through children's centresand extended schools.

This new extended service, which will need accessible resources targeteddirectly at parents, is expected to build on the current children'sinformation service (CIS).

And at the centre of development is the provision of information throughchildren's centres. For some, the proposals act as positive recognitionof the high-quality services already on offer.

The CIS in Dorset, for example, has been developing and diversifying theway parents can access information for some time. Twenty-two children'scentres are planned for Dorset by 2008, and in the four already up andrunning, computers allow parents to access information in a confidentialenvironment.
