With new measures aiming to lift a further 200,000 children out ofpoverty over the next three years announced in the recent Budget, theissue is of central relevance to local authorities as they have theunique strategic scope and ability to both lead and co-ordinate the kindof robust intervention needed to affect real change for children inpoverty. This includes strategies to improve access to good-qualityearly years and childcare, increasing incentives to help parents intowork, developing their skills and helping parents to get the financialadvice and benefits they are entitled to. It will also mean targetedinterventions and support for those groups who are traditionally at riskof suffering poverty and can face multiple barriers to employment.
