The survey Smoking, drinking and drug use among young people in England in 2006 has revealed that nine per cent of pupils aged 11 to 15 reported having taken drugs in the past month, down from 11 per cent in 2005.

Six per cent of 11-year-olds said they took drugs at least once a month, compared with 29 per cent of 15-year-olds. The number of 11- to 15-year-olds who had used cannabis fell from 11.7 per cent in 2005 to 10.1 per cent in 2006.

Martin Barnes, chief executive of DrugScope, said: "One risk factor is parents who misuse drugs. Although there have been improvements in terms of awareness of professionals and service provision, more needs to be done."
