The youth service has a key role to play in helping to build a vibrant, diverse and cohesive society.

Community cohesion? Another buzz-word we've been bludgeoned with lately? Its ubiquity stems from the Cantle report of 2001 into the civil disturbances in northern towns.

Do we need another term? What's wrong with racial equality and social inclusion? The Local Government Association thinks this goes further.

Its definition of a cohesive community is one that has a common vision, where diversity is valued, where those from different backgrounds have similar life opportunities and where strong relationships are developed between people from different backgrounds in the workplace, in schools and within neighbourhoods.
