Yarl's Wood? Didn't that burn down? Indeed it did. Yarl's Wood in Bedfordshire is a purpose-built, privately run "immigration removal centre" dealing mainly with failed asylum seekers. Much of it was razed after rioting in 2002. But one block was renovated and now operates as the main removal centre for women, young people and children.

Is it grim? Her Majesty's chief inspector of prisons inspected it last year and deemed it "not performing sufficiently well" in areas including safety of detainees and the availability of purposeful activity. As a result, it was recently subject to an unannounced reinspection. Some things had improved but the chief concern was the detention of children.
