Police leaders identify priorities

A new strategy sets out four key areas that the police service must improve for children and young people.

The National Strategy for the Policing of Children and Young People is the first to be produced by the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) since it replaced the Association of Chief Police Officers in October 2014 as the body for police leaders.

It calls for police forces and officers to develop a preventative approach to working with young people so that offending behaviour is tackled before it escalates.

The strategy highlights four key issues that police leaders want to improve the service's record on, details for which are examined here.

STOP AND SEARCH

The use of stop and search is one of the police's most controversial tactics, with the practice disproportionately being targeted at certain groups, such as young black men. Although highlighting that its use has fallen two-thirds in recent years, the strategy recognises the practice can create "strong feelings and resentment".
