Play work: Qualification for teenagers explored

1 min read
Work is under way to develop a new playwork diploma for 14- to 19-year-olds.

SkillsActive, the sector skills council for play, is exploring differentoptions for the new qualification. It is looking at how playwork couldbe integrated into its existing sport and recreation programme for thisparticular age group.

SkillsActive is also working with other sector skills councils to seehow play and early years could be part of an integrated qualificationfor working with children and young people. "It is quite a challenge togo across so many sectors," admitted playwork unit director PaulBonel.

One option could be to have basic training on a common core of skillswith the chance to specialise in an area like playwork.

Bonel said the diploma, which is expected to be available by 2008, couldbe a vital step to encourage more young people to see working withchildren as a viable career.
