Play: Racism keeps staff from top positions

A blinkered attitude towards racism in the play sector is continuing to lead to a lack of Black and other ethnic minority staff in management posts and on national associations.

Play workers are often unaware of the barriers and stereotypes facingBlack and ethnic minority children, avoiding debates about racism byfocusing on "diversity" and "inclusion", according to Equal in Play, areport by London Play.

Opportunities to progress for ethnic minority staff showed little changesince a previous report on equality in play in 2002.

The study of seven London projects found no ethnic minority staff inmanagement positions, even though 36 of the 105 staff were from minoritycommunities. A separate survey of 21 play organisations and a range ofmanagement staff showed that only four Black and Asian staff held seniorpositions.
