Play: Legal assessment backs risk policy

A policy to ensure children can enjoy challenging play activities that involve taking risks has been endorsed by a top legal expert.

This is an important development that will help efforts to create betterplay provision, said campaigners.

Play organisation PlayLink, a play manufacturer and five localauthorities paid for the official legal assessment by Raymond MachellQC. He endorsed PlayLink's play policy and the Play Safety Forum'sManaging Risk in Play Provision statement.

PlayLink director Bernard Spiegal said it was a significant step thatwould reassure local authorities that are fearful of being sued fornegligence if children are hurt in playgrounds.

"Most local authorities are concerned about negligence and spend a lotof time trying to avoid negligence claims," said Spiegal.
