Plans to promote youth work in schools hit by lack of funding

1 min read Education Youth Work
A lack of government funding could hamper plans in Scotland to get more schools involved in youth work, voluntary sector leaders have warned.

Learning and Teaching Scotland, the organisation responsible for developing the school curriculum in Scotland, is currently pushing the agenda on youth work in schools as it sits well with the new Curriculum for Excellence. Youth work is seen as a key way to deliver the curriculum's four core aims, which are to make young people successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors.

The drive has been welcomed by the voluntary sector. But concerns have been raised about funding, since the government ended ringfenced funding for youth work in March.

Tom Watson, director of youth work charity Fairbridge, said: "The sector welcomes this recognition of the contribution youth work can make in supporting schools to meet the needs of young people."
