In last week's Department for Communities and Local Government whitepaper Planning for a Sustainable Future, the Government said it willintroduce planning rules for councils that prioritise town centres overout-of-town shopping developments.
Tim Gill, play consultant and former director of the Children's PlayCouncil, said encouraging people to remain in town centres gave childrengreater independence and was also likely to reduce accidents.
"If a town centre is a lively place with a lot of people about parentsare more likely to let children travel on their own."
Meanwhile the chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Play, HelenGoodman MP, has called for developers to be duty bound to provide playspaces in all housing developments.
