Plan to clear youth court backlog

1 min read Youth Justice
A youth court in London may be reopened to clear a backlog of court cases.

Her Majesty's Court Service (HMCS) is considering how to reduce the burden on Thames Youth Court, in east London, as the amount of work is causing delays to the justice system.

Inner-London youth courts deal with 10 per cent of the youth court caseload in England and Wales, but the HMCS says the current arrangements at Thames Youth Court are no longer satisfactory.

The court deals with all youth cases from the London boroughs of Camden, Hackney, Islington and Tower Hamlets. But heavy caseloads mean there are delays and courts are sitting late, with young people waiting hours for their cases to be heard.
