Partnerships prove difficult to work

Early Years
Six months since the Childcare Act 2006 came into force, a senior government official has admitted that children's centres are struggling to work with Jobcentre Plus.

The Act set April 2008 as the date for all local authorities and Jobcentre Plus partners to be working together to improve the outcomes of children up to five.

But Kevin Woods, assistant director of children's centres and extended schools at the Department for Children, Schools and Families, admitted at a conference last week: "Most areas are still struggling to agree good partnerships with Jobcentre Plus."

Purnima Tanuku, chief executive of National Day Nurseries Association, said: "Areas that are positively working in partnership with Jobcentre Plus have reported great results where parents have been supported in new learning and training. We would encourage those areas without these connections to invest time into making the link to help improve opportunities and outcomes for local parents and communities."
