Parents say school starts too young

Early Years
Parents believe children are starting school too young, according to an online poll.

Pat Spungin, founder of parenting website raisingkids.co.uk, said two-thirds of the 70 parents quizzed felt their children were not old enough to start formal learning at four or five and criticised schools for not being flexible.

Speaking at a Westminster Education Forum event last week, Spungin said: "Parents asked that for the first two years in school children should develop their imagination, learn social skills and teamwork, so formal learning should be later."

She also said schools with one intake a year are continuing to teach children who have just turned four with pupils who are nearly five.
