Parenting support: Guide on conduct disorders released

Guidance on helping parents care for children with conduct disorders was issued last week.

The joint National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence andSocial Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) guidance suggests usinggroup-based parent education when managing conduct disorders in childrenunder 12 or with a developmental age of under 12.

It says individual-based programmes are recommended only when thefamily's needs are too complex for group-based programmes or where thereare particular problems in engaging parents.

Around two-fifths of children with conduct disorders become youngoffenders later in life, according to SCIE.

A spokeswoman for YoungMinds said being the parent of a child with aconduct disorder could be "extremely difficult and very isolating"."Structured parenting groups are a positive step to ensuring thatparents, children and families have the support they need in anon-judgmental local setting," she said.
