Panel of experts set out to get adoption sector's 'house in order'

Members of the government's new Adoption Leadership Board explain how they will help ensure adoption reforms change local services on the ground and improve the system for children and adoptive parents.

Although numbers of children being adopted are on the rise, several thousand remain on the waiting list for a new home and wide variation exists in the success of councils in recruiting prospective adopters.

As part of ongoing efforts to improve the system, the government last month announced that a new Adoption Leadership Board will support local authorities drive through reforms and improve the system. So what will it look like and how will it work?

The leadership board is intended to drive sector-led improvement through monitoring the adoption system, providing data on performance and disseminating best practice. Made up of senior figures from across the sector (see graphic), it will meet four times a year and will be accountable to the government.
