Opinion: Vox pop - Should prison staff have more disciplinarypowers?

1 min read Youth Justice
The Prison Officers' Association has called for more powers to deal with disorder among young people held in custody after repeated outbreaks of violence at Lancaster Farms Young Offender Institution over the past year.

YES - Brian Caton, general secretary, Prison Officers' Association

There is no magic archway they come through at prison that will change them. You must respect people in authority, you must keep your accommodation clean, but more than that you must respect yourself. Therefore the restriction of privileges and restriction of young people's ability to live the kind of life they want to live is paramount to changing behaviour. That's what we're trying to do. We're trying to change behaviour and in order to do that we should have powers to discipline young offenders.

NO - Frances Crook, director, Howard League for Penal Reform
