Opinion: Vox Pop - Should parents control services for their children?

2 mins read
Parents angered by Stoke-on-Trent Council's plans to allow a private or voluntary sector organisation to run its children's centres are considering setting up their own (CYP Now, 6-12 February). But is parent control the way forward?

NO - KAY BEWS, chief executive, Home-Start UK

Parents should not control services, but they should play a part in determining the way services are provided. We work alongside parents and recognise that they are often best placed to know what is right for their children.

It's paramount that parents and agencies work in partnership. We should encourage parents so they are empowered and their voices heard. Parents should be brought in at the consultation stage and listened to throughout, not at the end when decisions have been made. Our aim is to safeguard every child. We need to engage with parents and help them to build relationships with services that support them.
