Opinion: Vox Pop - Does the youth justice system need major reform?

1 min read
A review of the past 10 years of youth justice policy by the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies has exposed major failings in the system and suggested significant improvements are needed (CYP Now, 21-27 May).

YES - Debra Clothier, national policy development manager, Nacro

Let's stop thinking the criminal justice system can solve so many social and economic problems - the shocking number of young people in custody proves it is failing. We need to: reconsider the age of criminal responsibility; get young people suffering from mental health problems out of the system; provide looked-after children with additional support; and stop letting mistakes made by young people affect the rest of their lives - especially if it excludes them from education or work. We should remember involving victims shouldn't mean children's rights are no longer paramount.

YES - Joe Farrington-Douglas, senior research fellow for public services, the Institute for Public Policy Research
