Opinion: Vox Pop - Are children getting left behind in the digital age?

A survey has found that one third of adults are not online. If their parents are not up to speed with the internet, does it mean that children and young people are missing out on all the benefits that the digital age has to offer?

Somewhere between one-fifth and one-quarter of all children of school age do not have internet access at home and there is a growing body of evidence that this puts them at an educational disadvantage. It also means, increasingly, they are more likely to be stigmatised as coming from a poor or disadvantaged background. This makes a bad situation worse. Who wants to be the only kid in the class who can't instant message? Precisely because of this, I am delighted that the government recently declared its intention to ensure every child of school age has internet access at home.
