I have always reckoned that many young people short of money may well have time on their hands, and are able to make their payment "in kind". This has been the basis of the broader ideas behind "time dollars", where people make a contribution to others and can then cash in the time given by them for the time of others - "time banking".
The creator of time dollars and time banking is Edgar Cahn, and I have just read No More Throw-Away People (Essential Books 2000). He makes a powerful case based on the idea of "social capital" - trust, reciprocity and civic engagement that constitutes the "connective tissue that holds a society together".
