Opinion: Take on young people for society's sake

This is why we have to be careful with David Cameron's wish to see more members of the community taking on young people in public space. "Taking on" has a number of very different meanings, from direct confrontation to care and nurture. Hopefully, Cameron had some middle course in mind.

He is right to suggest that we need more engagement with young people. Some basic courtesies and contact would not go amiss; many young people just hanging around feel they are almost invisible until they are thought to have done something wrong. A friendly nod of the head can elicit at least a few grunts.
