And, as a result, I was always having to "have a word". I used to ask him if he ever thought beforehand about the implications of his behaviour - how would he have reacted if he was in my shoes and faced with the same situation?

He was not unintelligent, just completely insensitive to the needs and responsibilities of others.

Things came to a head on a weekend away. Colin was on a collision course not just with me but with every other member of the group. He seemed to be clumsy both in his actions and his words. He knocked coffee cups over and every utterance appeared to be a wind-up.
