Opinion: Soapbox - We should all learn how to cope with death

Rob Creasy's recent article in Children Now on grief (14-20 April) highlighted how schools deal with death, in this case a pupil's.

I work as a teaching assistant and have seen the effect of death on pupils when a family member or pet dies. The lack of information available, coupled with the myth that children are "unaffected" by death prompted me to undergo a Cruse Bereavement Care training course.

The Cruse training and the information from a workshop in Hull included looking at the stages of grief and stressed the importance of normalising this process. For a confused child who is experiencing the emotions of grief this is vital.

Children need to know that it is okay and "normal" to be experiencing the feelings and emotions they have and that there is some support at home or at school; ideally both.
