Opinion: Soapbox - Services must be accessible to all families

1 min read
One aim of children's centres is to develop the capacity of children and parents to be competent users of services. But we are often working with families who are struggling and, as a result, they end up being classified by professionals as "hard to reach".

I believe no family is hard to reach; services are hard to access. Toavoid this, it is vital that children's centre professionals helpparents find their voice so they can identify their concerns. In thisway, we can build up perspectives on issues before developing focusedinterventions in community-based services.

It is also crucial that all families can access services equally. Thereshould be no stigma attached to using services. The loneliness andisolation that many parents experience when they have their first child, and often with subsequent children, means they welcome the opportunityto attend sessions such as our Growing Together group, where they meetweekly for support while staff document the children's development viavideo and dialogue with the parents.
