One in four young people is estimated to suffer from poor mental health.According to the Mental Health Foundation, 15 per cent of pre-schoolchildren will have mild mental health problems, while seven per centwill have severe problems.
I addressed a conference of teachers recently on the issue ofchallenging behaviour in the classroom and, while the majority agreedthat mental health issues influenced many of the problems, there was acomplete lack of guidance and training. In fact, many professionalswould struggle to define what is meant by mental wellbeing.
So what do we mean by the term? I would describe it as emotionalresilience including the capacity to perceive, comprehend oursurroundings, to adapt and change them if necessary - in other words,being happy.
