OPINION: Paralysed by a maze of regulations

We sat in the kitchen. Then Maria's father came home from work and uttered a warm hello. A few minutes later Maria came home. Her parents courteously retired to the living room, to give us space to talk. For a moment, I wanted to ask them to stay. I told Maria that it was not the most sensible thing in the world to be sitting in the kitchen with her alone. She could not understand why. I told her that it was for the protection of both of us, to have someone else present. She laughed. We had known each other for six or seven years. There was trust between us.
