Opinion: History is bunk if you are a civil servant

Now we have the Welsh Assembly Government's consultation document on the future of the youth service in Wales. Less than a year on from its demise, you would be forgiven for thinking that something called the Wales Youth Agency - which had been supporting youth work for some 15 years - had never existed. It gets one mention: for a technical survey conducted some years ago on youth work staff in Wales. In the short section on "Background", it is conveniently ignored.

Yet the focus of the consultation document is on a range of issues that were central to the work of the agency: the Youth Work Curriculum Statement for Wales, support for the voluntary sector through a national grant scheme, the sanctity of the voluntary principle, workforce development, and closer engagement and collaboration with other professions.
