His wife Nathalie - also an ex-youth club member - was soon to give birth to a daughter, their second child. They already had a son of four. For some years, Simon had thought about going into "more challenging" youth work, as he put it. He was working in a residential children's home, but he didn't know where to start. Then, recently, accompanying his pregnant wife on a visit to the local health centre, he engaged in conversation with the receptionist while Nathalie underwent a routine examination.
He mentioned youth work and the receptionist suggested he had a word with someone she knew: Howard. He said that was the very person he wanted to speak to, but had lost his number. The receptionist, also an ex-youth club member but from a different generation of young people, had my number stored in her phone and gave it to Simon - hence the text message.
