
The publication last week of Ofsted's single inspection framework for children's services heralded the dawn of a new era for the way care services for vulnerable children are assessed.
It also marked the first of what is likely to be many differences of opinion that Debbie Jones, Ofsted's new national director for social care, is likely to have with her former local government colleagues.
Just 10 days into the job, Jones was having to respond to criticism (see box, below) from the Association of Directors of Children's Services (ADCS) - and others - over the inspection approach used in the new framework.
Jones's tenure as president of the association only ended in March. If the ADCS was hoping that having an ally in the Ofsted hierarchy might allow them a more sympathetic hearing, the events of the past week will have dispelled that notion.
