NYA Update: Comment - Rocks and hard places

1 min read
I completed my youth and community work training 15 years ago in Manchester and soon after qualifying got a part-time job with the local youth service.

Today, it seems that events in Manchester illustrate much of what is happening for the youth work sector in England.

Manchester Council has reduced its youth service to support only the most vulnerable teenagers. The idea of the council delivering open access, universal youth services has gone in Manchester, and many other local authorities are making similar changes.

In the same city, the University of Manchester recently announced it plans to close its Applied Community and Youth Work degree course, apparently due to difficulties in recruiting students.

I think this is very sad and as a profession we should rise up, defend ourselves and argue against these cuts. However, I can also see the reality of the public sector context and know local authorities and others are making hard decisions.
