Numbers game: Travellers

Rob Whitehead, national co-ordinator of the organisation Friend, Families and Travellers, said: "I'm glad to see that some feel they are integrated with society, but it is worrying that such a large number feel they are not. Forty per cent is a significant minority."

He added that in a survey carried out by Mori for gay equality group Stonewall, 35 per cent of the people interviewed admitted that they were openly prejudiced against Gypsies and Travellers.

Sixty-eight per cent of those interviewed for the Prejudice and Pride: The Experience of Young Travellers in Cambridgeshire report, which was produced for Ormiston Children and Families Trust, said they had experienced prejudice or racism.
