A recent evaluation of 185 sessions by the University of Belfast on behalf of the Northern Ireland Office has found that the programme, for 10- to 18-year-olds, has been proving popular with both young offenders and their victims.
Alice Chapman, director of the Youth Conference Service at the Youth Justice Agency, said: "Before starting the conferencing programme we did a survey of victims to see if they would come to a youth conference and the answer was 50/50. Now 92 per cent said they would and the same figure stated they were happy with the result and wanted to help the young person."
