Churches, Children and Child Protection was published last week by the Churches' Child Protection Advisory Service (CCPAS). It examines what policies 750 congregations from a range of denominations have in place regarding work with children and young people up to the age of 18.
Awareness of protection issues was generally very high, particularly of the denomination's own policy.
Two out of three children's and youth workers were trained in protection issues by their own denomination. But 16 per cent had no training at all. Limitations in churches' protection policies were also revealed in the report.
Elsewhere, it was revealed that nine per cent of churches had no child protection policy in place: representing more than 4,000 churches. Smaller churches were less likely to have a policy than larger churches. Two out of three churches review their policy annually.
