Northern Ireland: Williams vows to monitor ASBOs

1 min read
Northern Ireland's children's commissioner has vowed to monitor the application of anti-social behaviour orders (ASBOs), which came into force in the province last week.

Nigel Williams had opposed the introduction of ASBOs in Northern Ireland.

Earlier in the summer, he failed in his bid to apply for a judicial review of the consultation over their introduction (News, 30 June-6 July).

Last week, Williams' office said that his concerns over the "lack of consultation" with children would not "detract from any future concerns" he might have over the use of ASBOs.

A spokesman for Williams said: "We believe that there are many innovative and practical ways, already in operation, to tackle anti-social behaviour and hope that, if ASBOs are used, they will be applied as a matter of last resort.
