Independent reviewing officer settles whistleblowing case, Blackpool breakfast club gets glowing report, and DfE looks to change safeguarding rules as a result of teacher child porn case, all in the news today

A London council has apologised and paid compensation to an independent reviewing officer (IRO) who claimed he was sacked for “whistleblowing”. Jon Fayle, chair of the National Association of Independent Reviewing Officers (Nairo), was working as a self-employed IRO for Sutton Council when his contract was terminated in January 2012. Fayle said that reasons given for his dismissal were “utterly groundless”, claiming that the decision was taken because he had challenged the way the council had dealt with looked-after children in several cases. Fayle took the council to an employment tribunal, but an out of court settlement was reached, with Fayle being reinstated, receiving compensation, and an apology.
