The death of Baby Peter and Lord Laming's subsequent child protection report sent shockwaves through children's services departments across the country.
In response, the pan-London Safeguarding Children Board took action to bolster child protection arrangements in the capital.
One such measure involved introducing peer advisers to support children's social care teams across the 33 boroughs. Three regional safeguarding advisers were subsequently appointed in April.
Four months on, those advisers are starting to have an impact, sharing best practice and supporting service redesign across the capital.
Sharing good practice
Vivien Lines, one of the advisers, says child protection services in the capital are faring far better than anyone expected. "When we were appointed, people were thinking that Haringey was going to happen all over the place, but that hasn't been the case," she explains. "That doesn't mean everywhere is excellent but there is a lot more good practice than was previously thought."
